Celtic Fans Soccer 2013Celtic is to fit state of the art Wi-Fi technology at its Glasgow home in time for the start of the 2013-14 season.
This makes the club the latest in a line of major sports grounds to make the investment in providing fans with a match day experience based almost as much as what happens in a digital world as takes place on the pitch.
The Scottish Premier League champions have entered into a partnership with Sports Revolution, the sports media and digital marketing agency which operates in Ireland through former Vodafone executive Daragh Persse, and technology giant Cisco, to bring intelligent, high-density Wi-Fi to Celtic Park through Cisco’s Connected Stadium Wi-Fi system.
The decision was made following a survey of season ticket-holders designed to improve the match day experience.
Supporters will be able to access digital content at speed through their smartphones and tablets. Sports Revolution is also working with Celtic to develop an exclusive app called ‘Celtic Live’ that fans will be able to download from early in the new season. This will serve as a portal to a range of content, which may include action replays, information on players, food and drink ordering and betting.
“Celtic is committed to delivering the best match day experience possible for our supporters,” said club CEO Peter Lawwell.  “That requires staying at the forefront of technological advances. Our partnership with Sports Revolution and Cisco, coupled with other developments currently progressing around Celtic Park, means that the match day experience will be second to none.”
“As the worlds of HDTV, 3DTV and 2nd screen experiences continue to evolve, now more than ever we see the need for rights holders to provide the ultimate event day experience at the stadium,” said Sports Revolution’s Daragh Persse.
“The key driver is to ensure that the live experience is always better.”
“Full high density connectivity accommodates the social media world important to so many fans but also unlocks new commercial, sponsorship and fan engagement opportunities to justify the investment and deliver real return on investment.”
“The pace of adoption is very fast and the standard is rising quickly in terms of any bid for major international events such as being contemplated around the 2020 European Championship and 2023 Rugby World Cup.
