Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that are worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we are highlighting performances in Boxing, Athletics, Rugby, and the Special Olympics.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by PwC one of Sport for Business’ key partners.

Special Olympians

We have written elsewhere about the return of the Special Olympics Team from the World Winter Games, but it would be impossible not to mention them for their homecoming at Dublin Airport on Saturday.

Nicola Tuthill

Nicola Tuthill became Ireland’s first-ever Gold Medallist at the European Throwing Cup in Cyprus and was joined by Anna Gavigan with Silver and Oisin Joyce with Bronze at the Championships in Cyprus

Dan Sheehan

It may not have been the finishing position Ireland expected from the Guinness Six Nations but four wins from five is still cause for optimism, and Dan Sheehan’s hat trick of tries against Italy in Rome is surely a first for a hooker in an Irish shirt.

Lisa and Aoife O’Rourke

Over the weekend, the sisters won Silver medals in two weight categories at the International Boxing Association World Championships.

These are the Championships run by an organisation not seen as fit for purpose by the International Olympic Committee. They have been excluded from organising Olympic Boxing for the last two games.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association boycotted this event in 2023 but sent a team this year.
