Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that are worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we are highlighting performances in Heptathlon, Football, Golf, Gymnastics and Gaelic football
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Allianz one of Sport for Business’ key partners.
Kate O’Connor
Ireland’s first medal winner at the World Indoor Athletics Championships since Derval O’Rourke 19 years ago, and in a sport that is a combination of strengths and skills like no other.
A fantastic performance by Kate O’Connor, a graduate and sports scholar at Ulster University who adds Silver at World to the Bronze she won already this year at European level.
James Naughton
Limerick GAA has been all about hurling for a long time but it is a footballer who takes the garland this week. James Naughton scored an incredible 4-12 in his counties win over Waterford in the Allianz League, one that secures promotion and a trip to Croke Park for the League Final against Wexford.
Irish Football
In a World Cup qualification year you cannot ask for more than to win your first two games and that is what the Republic of Ireland has done with two 2-1 wins over Bulgaria in the UEFA Nations League Relegation Playoff matches. Both of them coming from behind, last night with two goals scored by forwards and into the singing section of an Aviva Stadium crowd of 40,156. Happy days all round.
Shane Lowry and Seamus Power
After Rory McIlroy’s win last weekend Shane Lowry and Seamus Power both secured Top 10 finishes in the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour overnight.
Gymnastics Ireland
Thousands packed the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena over Saturday and Sunday for the National Series Championships and the Jump Start competition.
