Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.
This weekend, we highlight action in Gaelic Football, Hockey, Rugby and Basketball.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by SSE Airtricity, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and supporters of our coverage of Sustainable Sport.
Donegal Football
Donegal lifted the Allianz Division One Football title after a dominant win over favourites Kerry at Croke Park, sealing the win with three rapid fire second half goals. It is only the second time they have lifted the trophy.
Carlow Football
Of equal if not greater importance was the victory of Calow over Longford in the Division Four Final on Saturday. This was the counties first national title in football since 1944 and was greeted warmy on the steps of the Hogan stand by GAA Director General Tom Ryan who hails from the county.
Hockey
The destination of the Women’s EY Hockey League was determined as Loreto retained their title for the third consecutive season.
Ulster Rugby
Ulster Rugby are in third in the BKT United Rugby Championship after claiming the only away win of the weekend, pulling clear to secure the maximum as they beat Zebre Parma 28-12 in a game where the sides were tied at 7-7 at the break.
Killester and Ballincollig
Killester and Ballincollig will contest the Domino’s Men’s Super League final on April 12th. Killester overcame a resilient Belfast Star 80-76, while double-chasing Ballincollig secured their place in the decider following a 98-77 over Griffith College Éanna.
Wolfhounds
The Irish Wolfhounds turned their impressive table-topping form into another trophy win in Edinburgh, as they finished the Celtic Challenge’s inaugural play-offs with a third victory of the season over their Irish rivals. There were familiar names on the Tryscorer’s list as well with Ireland captain Erin King, Linda Djougang and Wilson Hartnell’s Maeve Óg O’Leary all crossing the line.
