Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that are worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we are highlighting performances in Rugby, Gaelic Football,Basketball and Running
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Dublin City Council one of Sport for Business’ key partners.
Danah O’Brien
Having missed three kicks against France, the pressure was on Danah O’Brien in Italy in the Guinness Women’s Six Nations. With an early try scored, her first shot at redemption was a tricky one from near the sideline in Parma, but she nailed it and played her part in Ireland’s 54-12 victory, converting seven of the eight tries scored.
Kerry Football
It was perhaps written in the stars that the first handing over of a trophy named after Micheál O’Muircheartaigh to the Allianz League Division One winners should be to a Kerry Captain.
Killester Basketball
The only team in the Basketball Ireland Super League that fields both a Men’s and a Women’s team is heading for a double League triumph with both, and in two weeks, they will play in their sixth final out of six over the past year. A remarkable achievement for a club at the top of their game.
Mickey Harte
Having won five Allianz League titles across three decades with Tyrone, Louth and Derry, Mickey Harte made it Six when leading Offaly to the Division 3 title on Sunday before the Division One Final. They will now play either Meath or Carlow in a Leinster Quarter Final with plenty of confidence, a mere 12 months after losing to London in the Tailteann Cup.
Dublin City
The inaugural Dublin City Half Marathon was a huge success with 12,000 runner taking to the Northside streets of the City in blazing sunshine on Sunday. This will be a keeper and a great addition to the running calendar, the Dublin Sports offering, and the portfolio of the team behind the Irish Life Dublin Marathon.
