Cycling Ireland has published a new Strategic Plan, to be implemented from 2025 to 2029. It outlines the mission of Cycling Ireland as being to create ‘an island enriched and inspired by cycling.’

The Strategic Plan clearly outlines the core values and strategic goals of Cycling Ireland for the next five years, providing a blueprint for the growth and development of the sport across all disciplines on the island of Ireland.

The core values of Cycling Ireland underpin the plan. These values of Trust, Integrity, Respect and Accountability, combined with reflection on how Cycling Ireland will develop over the next five years, establish a clear pathway for progression.

The three key strategic goals outlined in the plan are to grow and develop cycling in Ireland, to facilitate quality experiences in cycling and to perform on the world stage.

The plan details the enablers that will be key to achieving the strategic goals. These enablers include supporting the network of volunteers, coordinating with stakeholders and expanding Cycling Ireland’s role in areas such as advocacy for road safety.

The plan has been developed over the course of 2024 following extensive consultation, benchmarking and review of Cycling Ireland.
Cycling continues to be one of the most popular sports in Ireland, with over half million people using it as a weekly form of exercise or active travel.

Cycling Ireland oversees a growing portfolio of domestic and international races and events. There are over 26,000 members taking part in various disciplines across the island of Ireland, and 37,000 school children participating in the Cycle Right Programme.

Speaking about the Strategic Plan James Quilligan, CEO of Cycling Ireland said:

“We are delighted to publish the new Strategic Plan for Cycling Ireland. Feedback showed a clear need for us to redefine our core values and mission. The objective of this Strategic Plan is to provide a clear direction for Cycling Ireland’s progress across all areas.

“Over the last number of years our organisation has gone through an unprecedented period of administrative, structural and governance reform. The progress made, provide a strong foundation for the delivery of the vision and goals set out in this plan.

“Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this Strategic Plan, and to all those involved in cycling across the island of Ireland.”
Cycling Ireland President Dr. Tom Daly added:

“Cycling Ireland has gone through various stages of development since its origin in 1987 when a number of cycling bodies came together with a vision to jointly promote what was best for cycling on the island of Ireland.

“This new Strategic Plan carries on that vision and development and sets out a blueprint for how the lives of the people can best be enriched and inspired by cycling in the years ahead.”
