A record-breaking 7,000 cyclists took to the streets of Dublin yesterday as part of the Great Dublin Bike Ride.

This was the first major event in this week’s Dublin Sportsfest which is gathering together a host of events from a wide range of sports and activities and will engage many thousands more over the course of the next seven days.

Yesterday’s routes of 70 and 105 kilometers were led off by Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring on Baggot Street and wound their way North of the city along the coast road before swinging back through Fingal and finishing up at the Dublin Institute of Technology, soon to be D4U Campus at Grangegorman.

This was the biggest edition of the Ride which started out in 2015 with the backing of Sport Ireland, Cycling Ireland and Dublin City Council.

It is also a major kick-off event for the European Week of Sport and was a natural flagship occasion to include as part of Dublin SportFest.
