The Sporting Club Ireland has announced an upcoming Evening with NFL Kicker Charlie Smyth, with Sport for Business members offered exclusive early access and discounted tickets.
Smyth is currently a placekicker with the New Orleans Saints and has one of the most distinctive stories among Irish athletes to emerge in recent years.
His route to the NFL did not follow the conventional American pathway through college football. Instead, his sporting background is rooted in Gaelic football, where he played as a goalkeeper at underage level with Down GAA.
His transition to American football came through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, supported by Tadhg Leader and Leader Kicking. The move represents a rare example of an athlete successfully crossing from the GAA system directly into the world’s most competitive professional sports league.
During his debut NFL season, Smyth recorded field goals from 56 and 57 yards, performances that quickly established his credentials at the highest level and highlighted the composure required to perform in elite, high-pressure environments.
His entry to the Active squad with the New Orleans also coincided with the transformation of the Saints’ season. The Saints had a 4-2 record in their last six games of the season, compared to a 2-9 record prior to his involvement.
The event will centre on an in-depth interview and discussion, exploring Smyth’s journey from Irish grassroots sport to the NFL, the mindset required to make that transition, and the wider lessons for performance, adaptability and ambition that resonate beyond sport. There will be opportunities for all those attending to meet with Smyth and have a photograph taken with him. It will be a great networking and promotional opportunity for individuals or businesses with an interest in the NFL after the Dublin game last year and the Super Bowl, which will take place in two weeks’ time.
