Last week it was Shane Lowry committing himself to Offaly GAA. Today we have news of Ed Sheeran doing likewise with his home town football club of Ipswich Town.

To younger fans, they may seem like a small club in the second tier of English football, but they have a rich history being one of the very few clubs to have won the League title, in 1961, the FA Cup, in 1978, and a major European trophy, the old UEFA Cup in 1981.

The music icon, whose record-breaking Divide tour finished in his hometown in front of 160,000 people over four nights at Chantry Park in August 2019, has agreed to an initial one-year deal to appear on the front of the men’s and the women’s first team shirts.

“The Football Club is a big part of the local community and this is my way of showing my support,” said Sheeran.

“I have always enjoyed my trips to Portman Road and I’m looking forward to going back there as soon as supporters are allowed into stadiums again.”

“With the new owners from the US coming in, there are sure to be exciting times ahead for Ipswich fans, including me.” H

“We are obviously thrilled that Ed has agreed to become our shirt sponsor next season,” added Director of Sales at the Club, Rosie Richardson.

“I have worked with Ed and his management team on various initiatives over the years and welcomed Ed and his guests to Portman Road for many games. He has shown his support for his hometown in lots of ways and this is another example of that.”
