We got a first glimpse of Ireland’s latest international sports arena when the Irish Davis Cup team opened the doors to the UL Arena in Limerick yesterday.
Osgar Ó hOisín is seen above posing in front of the Arena court where almost 5,000 fans will enjoy the matches against Austria on Saturday and Sunday.
The five strong team consists of O’hOisin, Michael Agwi, Simon Carr, Conor Gannon and David O’Hare.
The match will be a tough one for Ireland, given the potential strength of the Austrian team. They are in a position to select the former World No 3 Dominic Thiem, as well as other top players Sebastian Ofner (ranked 43 in the world), Jurij Rodionov who is ranked 111, and Filip Misolic (ranked 145).
Ireland meanwhile will be depending on 3 of those who performed so well against El Salvador, as well as the returning Carr and Michael Agwi. Agwi has had some impressive wins against top ranked players over the past year, while Conor Gannon will be looking forward to his second Davis Cup outing. Gannon made an impressive debut against El Salvador, winning his debut in singles and also, playing alongside David O’Hare, delivering a great doubles win over the 2022 Roland Garros doubles champion, Marcelo Arevalo.
Nissan were unveiled as the Official Vehicle Partner for the event this week. It is the first time that Ireland have hosted a home game in the prestigious tournament for nine years.
