The annual Hurling for Cancer Research charity match has raised a record-breaking €215,690 for the Irish Cancer Society, the highest total in the event’s 13-year history.

The figure, announced by Centra, the proud partner of this year’s event, reflects the remarkable generosity of fans, players, volunteers, and communities nationwide.

The 2025 edition brought thousands together in support of life-saving cancer research, pushing the initiative’s cumulative fundraising total to almost €1.9 million since its inception. Once again, the match showcased the unique power of sport and community in driving meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.

Centra Managing Director Luke Hanlon said the achievement highlights the deep commitment of customers and local retailers to a cause that touches every community.

“We’re incredibly proud of the impact this year’s event has made. The record-breaking funds raised will directly support the Irish Cancer Society’s life-saving research efforts,” said Hanlon. “What makes this event so special is the passion our Centra retailers bring, not just for their communities and for hurling, but for causes that truly matter. Their commitment, alongside the generosity of fans and supporters, helps us move closer to a future free from cancer.”

Event co-founders Jim Bolger and Davy Russell paid tribute to the many people who made the night possible.

“This event simply wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of so many who work tirelessly behind the scenes and come together on the pitch to deliver a night to remember,” they said. “We’re especially grateful to the Gardaí, the Order of Malta, and Carlow County Council for keeping everyone safe, to Cul Sliotars for the team kit, and to Centra for proudly coming on board this year.”

The Irish Cancer Society said the funds raised will have a tangible impact on research into early detection, targeted treatments, and improved outcomes for patients.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the incredible success of this year’s match,” said Glenda Ryan, Director of Fundraising & Marketing. “These vital funds will help us continue to invest in life-saving cancer research and support patients to live long and healthy lives beyond their diagnosis. We are so grateful to Centra for their support and commitment.”

Founded by Bolger and Russell, Hurling for Cancer Research has become one of Ireland’s most beloved charity sporting occasions, bringing together stars from GAA, horse racing, and beyond for a unique exhibition match each year.

Centra has confirmed it will continue its support in 2026, with plans already underway to grow the event even further. Tickets for the 2026 match, taking place on 24 August, are now on sale in selected Centra and SuperValu stores and at hurlingforcancer.ie
