The Cannon Kirk Gillen Irish Open in Squash began yesterday and continues through the week until the finals on Saturday.

The action is being streamed live from Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin with the action getting started at 1-30 PM.

The highlight for the home crowd on day one was watching the four home players. Hannah McGugan was first on the court. She gave it her best but couldn’t really trouble the full-time player Grace Gear of England, going down 11-3, 11-5, 11-7 in 18 minutes.

Sean Conroy was up next and played some great squash but his higher-ranked opponent Rory Stewart of Scotland had too much in the end, winning 11-5, 12-10, 11-9 in 33 minutes.

Irish number one Sam Buckley played Bernat Jaume of Spain, ranked 62 in the world 74 places above him. It didn’t look it, with Sam taking the first game 11-7 and getting to game ball in the second but Bernat fought hard and got it 13-11 before going on to win the next two games to one and two.

The Second Round gets going again at 1-30 today with players from Malaysia, the United States, France, England, Egypt, Hong Kong, Mexico, Finland, Scotland and Switzerland taking part.
