Sportsfile photographer Stephen McCarthy has been announced as the winner of 2nd prize in the prestigious ‘Sports, Singles’ category at the 2021 World Press Photo Contest with his image ‘Home Training’.

The image, taken in May 2020, features the then 87-year-old masters’ athlete Pat Naughton maintaining his daily training regime in his living room at his home in Nenagh, County Tipperary, during the ongoing pandemic lockdown.

This is the second time Stephen, from Cahersiveen, County Kerry has been recognised by the World Press Photo Foundation, collecting a second prize in the 2018 contest for a photograph entitled ‘Steaming Scrum’ which features The British and Irish Lions and Maori All Blacks packs engaging during a match at the Rotorua International Stadium in New Zealand.

“I think this image resonated with many people, as it did me because it captures a time in our lives that we all lived through,” said McCarthy.

“It has been a time that demanded adaptation and perseverance. The World Press Photo Foundation has not only publicised the image but also shone a light on Pat’s story, which has connected with so many people throughout the world. For this in particular I am extremely grateful.”

“It is a privilege to be acknowledged by the World Press Photo Foundation and to have my work, and that of the Sportsfile agency, recognised in such a prestigious competition for a second time.”

“This is tremendous news for Stephen and all of us here in Sportsfile,” added agency founder Ray McManus.

“The World Press Photo Awards are the most prestigious photography awards and for us at Sportsfile the news is especially satisfying as it brings our total of World Press Photo Awards to five over the past 12 years. Some achievement for an Irish agency.”

Some achievement indeed, well done to Stephen and the whole team.
