Hot off the back of his historic Olympic gold medal win, Gymnastics Ireland star Rhys McClenaghan is joining the ‘in-arena’ presenter team at the 2024 Northern European Championships taking place in Dublin next month.

This 12 nation men’s & women’s international event is the first podium level international gymnastics event to be hosted in Ireland.

McClenaghan, who is taking some deserved down time following Paris, will be joining RTE’s Marie Crowe and Shay Byrne as part of the team who will be keeping the audience of enthusiastic fans up to speed as the competition unfolds.

World class gymnasts will battle it out at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Dublin for the Team and All-Around titles on Saturday 21st September. The top 8 gymnasts on each apparatus from Saturday’s competition will then qualify through to the Apparatus Finals on Sunday 22nd September.

Competing nations include Denmark, England, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Wales and Ireland.

“On some downtime from training, I’m excited to have the opportunity to be behind the microphone and help the audience in the arena understand and follow all the excitement of the competition,” said McClenaghan.

“I look forward to sharing my insights with the spectators and I hope to see a great turn-out.”

“It is superb that Rhys is joining our event presentation team for the 2024 Northern Euros and doing so as Ireland’s first gymnastics Olympic Champion,” added Gymnastics Ireland CEO Ciaran Gallagher.

“Gymnastics yet again ranked as one of the most viewed sports both nationally and globally at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

“Rhys was key in this as one of the global gymnastics superstars that, along with his fellow finalists, delivered one of the most memorable event finals at the games.”

“Building on the huge public interest in the games we can’t wait to provide Irish sports fans the opportunity to see a live gymnastics event at home & in person.”

“While Rhys is taking a well earned break it really will be very special to have him in such an important role for the event, particularly as we look to present this event as a showcase for the development of a regular gymnastics international in Dublin.”

“Special thanks must go to our partners in the Department of Sport and Sport Ireland for their huge support. We cannot wait to put on a top class show for all the fans.”
