Conor McGregor MMAThe countdown could be on to the biggest ever fight night in Dublin following Conor McGregor’s second round victory over Dennis Siver in front of a packed Boston Garden in the early hours of this morning.

Immediately after the fight Mcgregor sprung from the ring to confront the man he will now face for a world title shot in their featherweight division, Jose Aldo Junior.

It appears that the bout will take place in Las Vegas in May but if McGregor wins and becomes a World Champion then the prospect of a return bout or a future title defence in Dublin will become very real.

Previous lower level bouts at the Three Arena have sold out in seconds and senior personnel within the UFC camp have spoken openly of GAA headquarters as a potential venue for future Championship fights.

Here of five things you may not know about MMA:

  • UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship first came to light in 1993, making the sport a 22 year old overnight sensation.
  • In December UFC signed a deal with Reebok which means all fighters will wear Reebok branded clothing in the week leading up to and in their fights.  Tattoos are the only way in which they will manage their own appearance from July 2015.
  • There are 8 weight divisions in the Men’s game and two in the Women’s ranging from Strawweight to Super Heavyweight.  All bar one, Jose Aldo, of the World Champions are from the USA.
  • Main event and world title bouts take place over five rounds of five minutes each.
  • Fights take place under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts and are ratified by Staes Athletics Commissions across the US.
