Some of Ireland’s leading hopes for Olympic success in July and August will not now know if they are going to be qualified to compete in Tokyo until June.

The European Qualification tournament that was stopped midway through in March of 2020 had been rescheduled to take place this April but has now been pushed back to June.

The final opportunity of a World Qualification group that was to have been held in June has been cancelled with the extra places distributed back out to the continental qualifiers.

The truncated process does have some positives with Kurt Walker, Kellie Harrington and Michaela Walsh requiring only a likely first-round win in the qualifiers to secure enough additional points for their place on the plane to be secure, according to analysis conducted by Irish-boxing.com

Michaela Walsh, George Bates, Aoife O’Rourke and Emmet Brennan are others in with a shout at joining Brendan Irvine as the only boxer to have so far secured his place.

Qualification, particularly in boxing, might still have a few twists and turns on the way but the path is now a little clearer than it was at the weekend.
