The League of Ireland is back with a bang next week after the 2026 season was officially launched today at Whelan’s in Dublin, setting the stage for another compelling year across the men’s and women’s competitions.

Attention in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division will again centre on champions Shamrock Rovers, as challengers around the country look to wrest the title from the Hoops. Last season’s runners-up Derry City head into 2026 following a busy winter transfer window, with hopes of going one better this time around. The signing of James Maclean alone will add to the buzz at the Ryan McBride Brandywell, and when they hit the road.

Shelbourne and Bohemians finished in the top four in 2025 and will again harbour ambitions to mount a sustained title challenge, as well as advance in Europe, alongside a wider group of clubs eager to force their way into contention.

Off the pitch, the league continues to build momentum. Overall attendances across League of Ireland clubs rose by 11 per cent in 2025, and 2026 is expected to reach even more supporters through growing crowds and an expanded broadcast footprint.

Virgin Media Television, Off the Ball, TG4 and LOITV will again bring the domestic game to audiences nationwide, as we have reported in recent weeks.

The new campaign gets underway on Friday, 6 February, when Shamrock Rovers host Dundalk live on Virgin Media Two. Two days later, Bohemians face St Patrick’s Athletic at the Aviva Stadium, also live on Virgin Media Two.

The SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division begins on Saturday, 14 March, with champions Athlone Town aiming to become the first side to win the title three seasons in a row. Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Galway United are among those targeting the 2026 title in what promises to be another highly competitive campaign.

In the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division, Cork City will be chasing an immediate return to the top flight following relegation last season, while Cobh Ramblers, Kerry and Wexford could form part of a tightly packed promotion race.

LOITV will again play a central role in the league’s coverage in 2026, with more than 550 live matches available through a range of subscription options. All profits generated by the service are returned directly to League of Ireland clubs. Supporters can secure their pass at www.loitv.ie.

“The start of a new season is always special, and this year is no different,” said Mark Scanlon, Director of the League of Ireland.

“The growth of the league, the quality on the pitch, and the passion of our supporters continue to drive Irish football forward. We are excited to welcome fans back to grounds across the country and showcase the very best of the domestic game.”

“After a brilliant 2025 where we saw two doubles won by Shamrock Rovers and Athlone Town, historic achievements by League of Ireland clubs in UEFA club competitions and countless dramatic stories throughout the year, we’re really excited to see what 2026 has in store.”

“These stories will be amplified even more with Virgin Media Television, Off the Ball, TG4 and LOITV bringing the league all over the country every week.”

“As the league kicks off again for another season — our 17th year as a partner — we remain committed to supporting the growth and success of the SSE Airtricity Men’s and Women’s Premier Divisions and the Men’s First Division,” said Ashley Morrow, Head of Brand, Advertising and Sponsorship at SSE Airtricity.

“What makes this league truly special is that it’s powered by people — the volunteers, staff, coaches and players whose passion brings a different kind of energy to Irish football.”

“We’re proud to be in their corner as we look forward to another brilliant season ahead.”
