Sport Ireland has published its Coaching Plan 2020 -2025. The plan outlines the goals of Sport Ireland Coaching and its commitment to leading and developing the sports coaching system, raising the standard of, and recognition for coaches, and to be a leader in the delivery of education and training in the sector.

The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the delivery of courses and coach certification with a marked decrease in the figures from 2019.

Courses have been adapted and delivered online though, with 11,559 coaches from 30 National Governing Bodies certified in 2020 with 1,010 courses approved for delivery.

“Coaching is a defining characteristic of organised sport and one that should be an enjoyable, fulfilling experience for all involved – those being coached and the coaches themselves,” said John Treacy, CEO of Sport Ireland.

“The Sport Ireland Coaching Plan outlines the next steps in developing and delivering a quality responsive and dynamic approach to coaching in Ireland.”

“Coaching is central to the work of NGBs and should be integrated into the policies and plans of anyone involved in sports programmes.”

“Coaching is central to player development and to sports performance at all levels of competition,” added Minister of State for Sport, Jack Chambers.

“Coaches are key agents in ensuring a quality experience for anyone involved in sport. Sport Ireland’s Coaching Plan outlines the path for the coming years, presenting a pathway to continue to develop and provide education, training, qualifications and support to all coaches and establish common national standards.”

“Good coaching makes the difference and Sport Ireland is working hard with its partners to lead in the delivery of education and training for all sports. Delivery of the Sport Ireland Coaching Plan will demand collective team effort from all agencies involved to ensure that participants, performers and coaching is the centre of sports development in Ireland.”
