The Ryder Cup and the Aer Lingus College Football Classic will be among the special events featured in the Sport for Business Sports Tourism event in partnership with the University of Limerick on Thursday 28th March.

There will also be a discussion with Philip Quinn of Munster Rugby on the economic value of the recent Pinergy sponsored Match at Páir Uí Chaoimh against Crusaders

The event will be a national discussion on sports event hosting and the legacy that such events can create.

Elaine O’Connor, the Ryder Cup Coordinator for Limerick City and County Council will be in conversation with Rob Hartnett at the event and we will also be hearing from a number of event organisers including those behind the TAG Rugby World Cup and the World Archery Youth Championships.

Brendan Meehan will also be joining us live to discuss bringing between 20 and 30,000 fans from the United States to Ireland each August.

The University of Limerick has had great success in recent years hosting events as diverse as a World U21 Lacrosse Championship, World Masters Ultimate Frisbee, European Flag Football Championships, European Schools Chess Championships, Ireland’s Davis Cup match against Austria and even a European Championships in Quidditch.

Where better then to bring together those with an interest in advancing Ireland as a World Class venue for sporting excellence and for the hosting of Major events.

In the next three years the island of Ireland will host the Ryder Cup and the Open Championship in Golf, the Euro 2028 Finals and the UEFA Europa League Final in Football and so much more.

Sometimes we do not give ourselves enough credit for the work that is being done but with a strong emphasis in Government on the staging of major events there has never been a better time.

This event will take the form of a nationally focussed discussion in the morning, followed by an optional tour of the UL facilities and the International Rugby Experience in the afternoon.
