Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 06.49.02Later today Swim Ireland will officially launch the 2015 Swim for a Mile Challenge.
Last year’s event saw 1,000 take to the pool after training over a period of three months to get to their goal of swimming the distance.
The campaign has sought to build a head of steam before being formally opened up to the public by using a neat social media tool called Thunderclap.
They identified a group of social media users that had either participated or supported the event last year and asked us to pledge the support of a social media post to flag that the 2015 version was just around the corner.
By this morning they had hit 119% of their target and created a social buzz that had reached out to over 100,000 potential participants.

The images that will be used will doubtless aid in terms of the ripples of messaging that will continue over the crucial first few weeks of the campaign.
We will discover later what this year’s target is and what new elements might be included but for now we, and you, are more aware of the event than we would have been and therefore more likely to either participate or spread the word.
Smart use of social media, well done Swim Ireland.
