Christina-McMahonProfessional boxing in Ireland in recent weeks has been scarred by association with the gangland feud that resulted in death at a weigh-in and massive negative media coverage.

The show and the sport must go on though and we can bring you news today of a success story emerging around Ireland’s only professional female boxer Christina McMahon.

She has secured the right to a WBC Super Flyweight World Title Fight in Mexico on March 12th and has turned to crowdfunding site pledgesports.com to raise the money needed to get there in the best shape.

“I’ve now finally got the opportunity to fight for a World Title at my preferred weight of 52.2 kg and will face a tough challenge in the number one ranked female Super Flyweight in the World, Zulina Munoz,” said Monaghan native McMahon.

“She has successfully defended the title seven times since she won it in 2012. Munoz has a record of 45 wins 1 loss and 2 draws, with 27 of her wins coming by way of knockout.”

McMahon’s previous title fight in New York was shrouded in uncertainty with the New York State Athletic Commission insisting on previously unnoticed medical tests that left the bout in doubt until the weigh in and disrupted her preparation.

“I’ve taken this fight at very short notice and want to give it my best shot,” added McMahon. who turned to crowdfunding to meet her expenses and has raised €8,000 in four days.

“Money was never my motivation, I just want to see how far I can go, and with your support I can make it to the very top and win the WBC Super Flyweight World Title in Mexico.”

In return for support, McMahon is offering a signed photo from her World Title fight, a personal training session at Peak Fitness in Carrickmacross, and even a boxing training session with her. She is looking for pledges of €10 up to €1,000 and has already beaten her target campaign funding of €8,000.

Individual donations from 16 supporters have so far helped on the road to world glory and perhaps even a measure of redemption for her sport.
