Volkswagen Ireland has extended its support of Irish sport through becoming the main sponsor for the 2012 Irish Professional Golfers Association Southern Championship to be held at Powerscourt Golf Club in Wicklow on 27th and 28th August.
Previous winners of the Championship include Christy O’Connor and Padraig Harrington.
Six of the last seven winners are in action again this year, including the 2010 and 2011 Champions Eamon Darcy and Mark O’Sullivan, while Brendan McGovern is looking to win the title for a fourth time.
This is the third time the tournament has come back to Powerscourt Golf Course, situated within the grounds of the eponymous estate near Enniskerry that was once owned by the Dunlop family and beside the Ritz Carlton hotel.
“We are delighted to have our brand associated with both the PGA and Powerscourt,” said Simon Elliott, Volkswagen Group Ireland CEO, “and we wish the players and PGA officials all the very best with the event.”
“This sponsorship will act as a terrific endorsement of the competition,” added Gavin Kavanagh of the PGA Board, “and we look forward to an exciting two days of golf action.”
Volkswagen have previously sponsored several golfing events for over the years, but their involvement in the Southern Championship will be the springboard for further activity in 2013 and beyond.
