This weekend promises to be one of the busiest of the year for Irish sport with a host of major games taking place at home and involving Irish stars abroad.
The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby repeats last years successful experiment of moving to an early evening slot on Saturday, thus avoiding a clash with the final day of the Irish Open golf at nearby Carton House and the double header of Leinster GAA semi finals which would expect to be seen by over 50,000 fans of Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wexford.
Tommy Bowe makes his British and Irish Lions Debut in the second test against Australia on Saturday lunchtime, wearing a hurling glove to add protection to his injured hand.
In Cycling the Tour de France gets underway this weekend as well with Irish cyclist Dan Martin confirmed as team leader with the Garmin team that is strongly fancied to do well. Martin was highlighted in the Observer newspaper as one of the riders most likely to challenge for this year’s yellow jersey.
In Athletics walkers from around the world will gather at St Anne’s Park in Raheny for the International Grand Prix of Walking where Colin Griffin is expected to take the Irish National Championship title in the absence of Rob Heffernan.
There is a full programme of matches in the Airtricity Premier League which resumes after a mid season break.
Wimbledon continues in London while Spain and Brazil contest the final of the Confederations Cup, televised live on RTE Sport on Sunday night.
