Crowd Funding Wins Athletics Broadcast

Athlone indoor arena

Crowd funding has secured live streamed coverage of today’s Irish Universities inter varsity athletics championship being held at the Athlone Institute of Technology.

Aer TV will carry the event from 10.15 this morning through to a close with live commentary from the Jump the Gun team that have been covering events at the new indoor track on the channel for the past two weeks.

“The athletes were aware of the streaming and we were asked for a cost on what it would take to put on a show today, said Orlagh Marnane of Aer TV.”

“They then approached nTrai, an athletics based crowd funding platform based in Limerick and got a campaign up to raise €1,800 in less than 48 hours.”

“They did ‘selfie’ videos urging friends and other athletes to donate either €10 or €20 and it became clear early yesterday that the target was going to be met.”

“This has all come to life in the space of a few short days but the pictures we broadcast will bring the championships to a much wider audience.”

The stream can be viewed through Aer TV’s sports channel.  It’s a great example of how an event or a group of athletes that might be too small to attract commercial sponsorship are finding new ways to address the costs they have to bear.

Sport for Business will host a Members’ Round Table on Crowd Funding on March 20th.
