Sport for Business is to host a major conference on the Business of Sports Science as part of the 50th anniversary of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition early in the new year.

The Conference will take place at the RDS on Thursday, January 9th and will bring together leaders in the field of sport and business analytics to explore opportunities for Ireland in one of the fastest growing areas of performance management.

There will be keynote presentations from the Irish Institute of Sport on achieving peak performance when it counts and negotiating the aftermath; from Pat Daly of the GAA on the changing environment of coach education; from BT Sport on the ways in which sports data is being used as part of the presentation suite within televised sport and from a number of practitioners in the field looking at the way in which the science of sport is developing in the future.

There will be a business panel looking at how the sector has developed and at what opportunities it can present for young people coming through education.  This will include Dr Sean McGarraghy, Director of the UCD Smurfit Business School MSc in Business Analytics and representatives from Accenture and BT.

Sports Analytics BT“Sport on a global basis is worth an conservative €400 Billion, that’s bigger than the economies of most countries and twice the size of our own,” said Sport for Business Founder Rob Hartnett.  “The value of marginal gains at the highest level is enormous and that is fuelling a powerful surge in the development of scientific ways in which sport is analysed and improved.”

“We believe there is a case to be made for Ireland playing a key role in the future development of analytics and sports science, and this Conference will be the kick off point for some smart initiatives around the sector.”

“It is  wonderful  to be part of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition which has been such a staple of Irish education and technology for five decades.”

“Sporting projects have been on the rise within the Exhibition and sport is a point of reference for young students that can bring science to life. This is an exciting opportunity to bring the worlds of sport, business and education together in a way that can build a very positive role for Ireland in a global market.”
