ERC Dublin RugbyShareholders in ERC are due to meet in Dublin today to agree the detail of a winding up of the company and the transfer of its functions in managing the club competition scene in European Rugby from a new base in Switzerland.

The Board of the company will convene tomorrow to approve the new structures, which will remain under the control of the International Rugby Board.

The new structure means that the IRB and the respective Unions can concentrate fully on the hosting of the Rugby World Cup which will take place in England next year.

Concern over the potential break up of European club rugby had cast a shadow over the tournament for Northern hemisphere teams and particularly for the administrators who might have had to manage the fallout from any break up.

Once the new company is formed and active, a campaign to build commercial deals including a likely multi-partner sponsorship model will begin in earnest.

Among the key areas likely to be targeted will be the alcohol, airline, motor, financial services, insurance and possibly betting and gaming sectors that have been to the fore in sponsorship growth across Europe in recent years.

It is not known yet whether Heineken will be part of the successor to the tournament they helped to create.

Staff working at the ERC offices in Dublin are expected to hear their options in the coming days as well.
