Specsavers is using Leinster Rugby’s Fergus McFadden to front a campaign to find Ireland’s most unbreakable friendship.

The campaign is promoting their children’s range of unbreakable lenses that use material from the canopies of fighter jets and combat helicopters. Named SuperTough, these lenses are ideal for withstanding the everyday rough and tumble of childhood.

“Having been such an active kid growing up, I can imagine how easily accidents happen to lenses when active children with glasses are mucking about,” said McFadden at the launch.

“These SuperTough lenses will allow children to really get stuck in and enjoy the things they love, without the fear of breaking their lenses and getting into trouble with parents.”

There is a steady stream of sports stars emerging as brand and cause ambassadors and rugby is to the fore.  Elsewhere today we write about Andrew Trimble fronting a campaign to raise awareness of nutrition while Paul O’Connell was out and about last week for Toyota and Johnny Sexton is an ambassador for them and for Aer Lingus.

This Specsavers role of reaching out to children and parents is particularly well suited to sports stars given how many of their pictures and postcards will be stuck to walls of bedrooms and hearing a message from somebody who you admire will always have a greater resonance.

“We firmly believe that wearing glasses shouldn’t stop children from enjoying an active and energetic lifestyle,” said Specsavers Chairwoman Sinead Clohessy, “and we’re  really delighted to launch our nationwide search for Unbreakable Friendships with Fergus McFadden, a super-tough Irish rugby star who also doesn’t break or crack under pressure.’
