Richard PearsonPledge Sports came through against strong opposition from a number of GAA based websites to land the Eircom Spider award for sports website of the year in Dublin last night.

The site provides crowdfunding services to individual athletes and teams and has been a member of Sport for Business since its early days.  It is now running sites for Irish, UK and US based sports teams, widening their ability to reach new audiences and to secure funding and engagement from a broader base than would traditionally have been possible.

“This is a great thrill to be recognised by the judges,” said Pledge Sports founder Richard Pearson.

“It’s a tribute to all the athletes that put in the effort as much as the highest paid professional and who can fund following their dream through the technology and the energy which we can make available to them.

The Gaelic Players Association ‘We Wear More’ site, Dublin GAA and GAAGo, the service offered in partnership between RTÉ Digital and the GAA were also shortlisted alongside the new website from Athletics Ireland and Disability Sport NI.

The Award for Rising Digital Star went to another friend in Clara Kelleher who was precisely that for Dublin when bringing the fabulous One Young World Event to the City last month.
