Calls for greater Cardiac Screening
Calls are growing in a number of sports for a greater degree of cardiac screening following the collapse last weekend of Premier League footballer Fabrice Muamba.  It emerged yesterday that the player’s heart had stopped for 78 minutes and that his survival was down purely to the fast actions of the officials and medical staff at White Hart Lane.
Sudden Cardiac Death has struck in Irish sport with Tyrone GAA Captain Cormac McAnallen and Irish U19 Rugby World Cup star John McCall two of those who died.
The GAA in particular has been active in seeking to combat the threat.  The Association recommends that all players over the age of 14 complete a cardiac screening questionnaire which seeks to establish through family history and general health who might best be screened through a physical exam and ECG.
Well over 1,000 Automated External Defibrillators have been purchased by clubs through a subsidised scheme and training in their use is provided regularly.
The IRFU also put a scheme in place in 2008 which provided for greater access for debrillators in clubs.
The AED’s which have saved many lives in sport were invented by Frank Pantridge, a cardiologist from Hollywood, County Down.
Basketball Finals to be shown live on Setanta
Friday night’s Nivea for Men National Superleague Finals will be shown live on Setanta Sport as part of the broadcasters three year deal with the sport.  Tickets for the Women’s and Men’s finals are available through Basketball Ireland at a cost of €10 for an adult or €5 for a child.
 
 
Grants for sporting youth
The Dublin City Sports Network is currently taking applications for small grant funding of projects to encourage youth participation in sport.  The grants are aimed at sports clubs and organisations to cover the cost of ongoing programmes designed to facilitate greater levels of physical activity.  Closing date for the current round of this funding, provided through the Irish Sports Council is Friday, March 30th.
England wins right to Host 2015 European Hockey Championship Finals
The Olympic Park in London has been selected as the host venue for the finals of the 2015 European Hockey Championships.  The Irish Men’s and Women’s teams would hope to be participating following 5th and 6th rankings in Germany in 2011.  Both will be playing in the 2013 ‘A’ Championship Finals next year.  The Women’s team face Spain today with victory securing a place in a final decider against hosts Belgium for a place at the London Olympics.
