There is an interesting study in the Irish Times drawn from research at NUI Galway around the use of social media by journalists in Ireland and around the world.
As would be clearly evident to anyone involved in media here irish journalists are right at the top of the global pile when it comes to using social media as part of their working day.
99% use twitter (We’ve yet to find the 1% that don’t) and of particular relevance is the breakdown by subject matter.
84% of sports journalists use Twitter multiple times a day to keep up to date on breaking stories and to source news. That compares to 81% in technology, 70% in business and 69% in news.
PR and the amplification of a campaign in sport and sponsorship beyond the confines of the media you control remains a vital part of any activation. Having a strong profile and presence on twitter is the most important way to catch the eye of those who will expand the audience reach.
It is also 3.5 times more widely used by journalists than the next most popular medium of Facebook.
