A total of 16 swimming pools around the country have been awarded €3.4 million in grant funding.
The money has been set aside under a special Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme that has now given over €17 million over the course of the present Government.
The money will be used to increase energy efficiency and improve disability access.
The money will go to three pools in Dublin, two each in Kildare, Mayo and Wexford and one each in Carlow, Clare, Cork, Leitrim, Longford and Waterford.
“Swimming provides a marvellous sporting opportunity for people of all ages and abilities,” said Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring.
“Given that so much swimming in Ireland takes place in indoor pools, it is also generally a weather-independent activity, a key advantage given our climate.”
“I am delighted to be in a position to approve the grants for such worthwhile projects. Since coming in to Government I have allocated more than €14m to swimming pools to improve energy efficiency and to enhance disabled access.”
“This has enabled swimming pools to reduce their energy costs and provide improved access for disabled swimmers and I am very happy today to be in a position to assist a further 16 pools.”
