The Tour de France concluded on Sunday with Chris Froome winning a second title, and crossing the line arm in arm with Ireland’s Nicolas Roche.

It was a Tour that started with drama and crashes, was determined by a single breakaway from the winner in the mountains as was the case when he won two years ago but which was once again shrouded in a miasma of distrust over whether such endeavour was possible without assistance.

It’s an issue which the sport at this level will continue to fight, a legacy of years of systematic cheating that soured the public. At a recreational level the activity of cycling continues to soar and that has been both prompted and will bring with it the pro sport.
