A new National Sport Tourism Monitor will be launched today at the World Travel Market in London.  Produced by W2 Consulting it looks at the impact of Ireland’s top 12 mass participation events and surveys over 1,000 of those who participated in them.

The economic impact of those 12 events is calculated at being €46.6 million bringing in over 100,000 supporters and from a tourism perspective generating 95,133 bed nights.

The value is derived from these being events that attract a higher spending category of tourist with 71% between the ages of 35 and 54.

Seven times as many would stay in hotel rather than hostel accommodation and their average spend while travelling to attend a mass participation event is €788.

The survey points out the value of a partnership between tourism and sport with 81% of respondents crediting the branding of the Wild Atlantic Way as having had a positive impact on their decision to participate in events in the West of Ireland.

It also breaks down the different impacts that relate to triathlon, athletics and cycling events, all of which the natural terrain here in Ireland is perfectly suited to.

A presentation and discussion of the National Sport Tourism Monitor 2015 will be part of the next gathering of the Sport Tourism group within Sport for Business which will take place at Croke Park on Tuesday, November 17th.

Copies of the full report will be circulated today to those engaged in the business of sports Tourism by W2 Consulting.  If you would like to get a copy of the report please contact us today and we will send it through to you.
