A new Dublin City Sport & Wellbeing Partnership has been launched in the capital.

The partnership is being established to take a more strategic and consolidated approach on how sport and physical activity are delivered across the city.

The board members will include representatives from Dublin City Council, National Governing Bodies of Sport and other sectoral interests and will play a key role in the development and delivery of specific aims and outcomes.

The Partnership will be chaired by Irish Grand Slam winning rugby captain Fiona Coghlan who will be joined by Michael Dawson from Leinster Rugby, John Costello from Dublin GAA, Richard Fahey from the FAI, Sarah Keane from Swim Ireland, Sinead McNulty from Dublin Institute of Technology, James Galvin from the Federation of Irish Sport, Rob Hartnett from Sport for Business, Brendan Kenny, Seamus McGrattan and Maurice Ahern from Dublin City Council.

“Dublin City Council currently supports, manages and delivers a wide range of sport and recreational programmes and services across city and I am delighted to launch this new partnership which will build on the very positive work and will place a much greater emphasis on health and wellbeing,” said ArdMhéara Críona ní Dalaigh today.

“Mar a deirtear “Ní neart go cur le chéile” agus leis an togra nua seo is cinnte go gcuirfear saol sona sásúil sláintiúil go mór chun cinn sa chathair.”

The purpose of this initiative is three-fold,” added Fiona Coghlan.

“To improve the quality of life of people living and working in Dublin; to provide opportunities for people living in, working in and visiting Dublin city to partake in sports and physical activities through facilities, infrastructure, services, programmes and events; and to have Dublin city recognised as a leader in sports and wellbeing both nationally and internationally.”

“It is my hope that the Partnership will give us the opportunity to develop and implement a strong coherent strategy for sport and wellbeing in the City.”

The Board will develop a strategic plan for early in 2016 looking at how the existing programmes and facilities can be built upon and physical activity brought centre stage in the city.

Sport Ireland CEO John Treacy was at the launch and spoke of how this partnership of sport and local authority was essential to really expand the positive impact that sport can have.

The Partnership will be holding discussions with major businesses across the City to incorporate elements of how they deliver wellness programmes for staff and how the elements of programmes like those can be expanded.

“We are delighted to be involved with such an ambitious project,” said Sport for Business Founder Rob Hartnett.

“The plans we make today can have a real lasting impact on the City that we and our children live, work and play in.”

“Dublin is already a great city of sport.  This is an opportunity to build on something positive and to tell that story to the world.”
