Remembering your roots
The Republic of Ireland squad paid a nice homage to their own start in the game during a break after training when going back to the dressing room and emerging kitted out in the colours of the League of Ireland teams that had given them their break in the game.
The League is on its mid summer break at present and while the quality of competition at the top looks like setting up for another barnstorming end to the season there are problems below with Athlone Town unable to fulfil their most recent fixture in a dispute over wages.
Sport can be cyclical. After Scotland drew with the Republic team in Dublin it looked a forlorn hope to qualify but that was turned around. Keep the faith, work hard, remember those who have helped along the way and things will turn again. This was a good thing to do and will have been warmly received by existing and hopefully new fans of the game here in Ireland.
A New Generation
Hats off to Northern Ireland who wrote themselves into history yesterday beating Ukraine for their first win at a major tournament since Gerry Armstrong scored against Spain at the 1982 World Cup.
Gareth Macauley can now look forward to being the star of a thousand dinners and tributes and we look forward to reading his diary from the Euro’s in the Irish Sun in the coming days.
Stairway to Heaven
That win could yet secure a place in the Last 16 for the Northern Irish fans, though hopefully not at the expense of the Republic. That could mean an extra boost for Belfast International Airport who have been receiving great credit from travellers in recent days having branded their internal stairway with a Dare to Dream message.
Sometimes it’s the little things that count the most.
