As part of a new weekly feature we will be highlighting a sporting cause which we believe should be brought to a wider audience for awareness and support.

Kicking off the series we are pleased to feature the Irish Powerchair Football team who are raising money to compete in next year’s World Cup in Florida.

This action-packed team sport combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game very similar to soccer.

Powerchair Football is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. Powerchair Football is unisex by design, and male and female participants are often on the same team, as well as opposing sides.

“Powerchair Football is so important to give people with disabilities a social and sporting outlet,” said Irish Powerchair Football Secretary Donal Byrne.

“The sport gets them out of their isolation, bringing great people back into being active and making friends.”

“Muscular Dystrophy makes up a large percentage of our player base, many with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy which has a life limiting time span so to these players football is more than just a distraction it is their everything.”

The team is supported by the FAI but needs to raise funds to help prepare the team to travel to the US and to support the great work done at local and regional level.
