He bid to become the President of the Olympic Council of Ireland last month and the idea of four year cycles obviously struck a chord with Basketball Ireland CEO and Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne who has signed a new four-year contract with the National Governing Body.
The new deal will keep him thinking of hoops and based at the National basketball Arena until the end of 2020.
O’Byrne joined Basketball Ireland in 2011 having previously served as CEO of the FAI and in business roles with Coca Cola, CRH and the Mansfield Group.
“I am really looking forward to the coming months and years,” said O’Byrne.
There are a lot of exciting events ahead for Basketball Ireland, most notably this August when we host the FIBA Under 18 Women’s European Championships Division B here in Dublin.”
“We are also looking forward to working closely with our new Irish senior men’s head coach, Pete Strickland, and his team in the coming months and years.”
“The end of 2017 will also be notable for the organization as we aim to be completely debt free for the first time in a number of years.”
“This is thanks in no small part to a strategy that we put in place a few years ago, and we have achieved our target ahead of schedule which we are really happy about, so there’s a lot to look forward to and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
