The flip side of the phrase ‘you have to see it to be it’ is that you have to be it to see it.’ Basketball Ireland is putting that to the test with the appointment of  Conor Meany as the new Commercial Manager.  Meany is replacing JP Montgomery in the role as he moves on to another business opportunity.

Meany not only has the required business skills but he is also a player with Men’s Super League team UCD Marian where he has also been active as an organiser and volunteer.

Meany brings significant experience to the role, not only from his most recent employment with Cartrawler where he oversaw content marketing, social media and PR management, but also from his time with Olytico where he worked with, and managed, a wide range of corporate clients looking to identify social media trends.

“As Basketball Ireland prepares to host the FIBA Under 18 Women’s European Championships Division B in Dublin this August, Conor’s first project will be to help us present the great attraction of basketball to a wider corporate community,” said Basketball Ireland Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne.

“He came through a tough interview schedule against several very strong candidates and we are delighted to have secured his professional services. It is an added bonus that basketball flows through his veins.”

Meany’s father Paul is a former President of Basketball Ireland and the family has been involved over many decades.  Even as a player Colm has been co-commentator on live TV coverage of the sport on Setanta.

In a 2015 profile of him in the Irish Examiner Kieran Shannon wrote of Meany that ‘there was hardly a more articulate or discerning player in the league.’ Those are traits that will serve him well in the years ahead.
