“We are facing a very difficult time for the golf industry and it is imperative that we equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and tools to maximise the potential of Killarney Golf Club Limited,” said the company’s general manager Maurice O’Meara.
Killarney hosted the irish Open for three years until 2011 but lost out this year to Royal Portrush, where all four days sold out, and again in 2013 to Carton House.
Killarney recorded a loss of €232,000 in 2011 and sold one of its three courses near the town centre for an amount which should cover the immediate and medium term running costs.
“This is a proactive response to the continuing trading difficulties impacting on the golf and tourism industry nationally. The club is determined to be in a position of strength to capitalise on opportunities that will arise and to cement its position as one of the premier golfing resorts in the country,” added a club spokesman.
Sport for Business wil report from the KPMG Golf Business Forum which takes place from the 17th to the 19th September this year in Tuscany.
