Ireland’s Paralympics Team came close to a first medal on the Opening Day of competition in London but James Brown and Darren Shaw just lost out in their Bronze medal race at the Velodrome to opponents from Spain. Ellen Keane finished seventh in her swimming final last night and Eilish Byrne is in contention after a strong opening round at the Equestrian Arena in Greenwich.
Today’s action sees Jason Smyth, John McCarthy and Heather Jameson in action in athletics events in the main stadium. Smyth appears in the 100 metres semi final at 9.35 this evening and is expected to advance to tomorrow night’s final where he will defend his Gold from Beijing.
Rena McCarron Rooney, Eimer Breathnach and Philip Quinlan are back at the Excel Arena for their second matches in the table tennis across mid morning.
Jonathon McGrath and Laurence McGivern are in action in the pool but the best hope of progress to a final this evening is with Bethany Firth who has the second fastest time of those competing in the 100 backstroke and could be our first medallist.
Ireland’s first ever shooting and rowing competitors are in action as well while Catherine Walsh and Fran Miller make their first appearance of the Games in the time trial at the Velodrome this morning, an event which also sees a Paralympic debut for Katie George Dunlevy and Sandra Fitzgerald.
