The final countdown to Sunday’s All Ireland Camogie finals at Croke Park began with a call from the President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor for all those involved in the sport to bring the stadium to life by attending this Sunday’s triple bill of deciders.
She was flanked by the President of the GAA Liam O’Neill and by Ryle Nugent, Head of Sport at RTE who will broadcast the finals live on TV and radio and devote the Sunday Game to the sport later that evening.
Down face Meath in the Premier Junior final at noon, followed by Galway and Derry in the Intermediate decider at 2.00pm and Senior final between Wexford and Cork at 4.00pm.
Lawlor hopes that fans of general sport will come along to witness the skill and passion of the fastest women’s field sport played in the world and highlighted the prominence of women in sport this year, as evidenced most recently at the Olympics and Paralympics.
“Sunday’s finals are one of the largest female sporting events in the country,” she said. “Given the increased coverage and deserved credit that women in sport, across a variety of disciplines have garnered this year, our upcoming games provide another opportunity to fix the spotlight firmly on our female sports stars and showcase their talents to a huge national audience.”
The main event is also being backed up around Dublin by the Daintree All Ireland Club Sevens tournament hosted by Kilmacud Crokes and the first Cooper U14 blitz taking place around the city.
Among the companies sponsoring county teams involved on the day are national brands Bord Gais Energy, Supermacs and Specsavers.
