The sport of Camogie enjoyed its main day in the national spotlight yesterday and produced one of the best games seen at Croke Park this summer with Wexford landing a third successive All Ireland title against Cork.
Ursula Jacob was the star of the show scoring two goals and seven points to steer the team to victory. The game burst into life midway through the second half when three goals in two minutes saw the stadium erupt.
The attendance of 15,900 was a shade disappointing given the potential for Wexford to win such a prestigious hat trick and with Junior and Intermediate finals also down for decision on the day. RTE televised events live and in review on the Sunday Game which brought events to a much greater audience but the scheduling of club matches in Cork, including ones involving family members of players on the Cork side was not conducive to the kind of county wide enthusiasm that will doubtless grip Mayo and Donegal this week for the All Ireland Football Championships.
Participation numbers in the sport continue to grow and there is a vibrant under age structure across the country. This was in evidence with the first Cooper U14 All Ireland Blitz that took place over the weekend. Over 1,000 players from 28 counties fielding 48 teams participated on club grounds across Dublin and enjoyed the main event afterwards.
It is hoped this tournament, which is being sponsored for an initial two years by Cooper, will help to prolong the juvenile involvement in sport. The Irish Sports Council is currently surveying young men and women to determine how significant drop offs, especially in women’s sport at this age can be addressed.
