Double U20 European 100/200m champion, Rhasidat Adekele, has smashed the Irish 400 metre record with a 50.70 third-place performance while representing Texas University in the final of the Big 12 Championships in Texas on Sunday night.

The breath-taking performance breaks Joanne Cuddihy’s record of 50.73 which had stood since 2007. Adeleke’s record-breaking time was made look all the more impressive in that she had clocked a 51.70 (then PB) just 24 hours previous.

The 19-year-old Tallaght star is now the fastest Irishwoman of all time at 60m, 200m, 300m and 400m.

It completes a spectacular weekend for Irish athletics which saw another four Irish records broken across track and field events:

Louise Shannahan (Leevale AC): New Irish 800m Record 1:59:42
Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC): New Irish Shot Put Record 20.07m
Dean Casey (Ennis Track AC): New Irish U20 10,000m Record 28:57:34
Sarah Healy (UCD AC): New Irish U23 Mile Record 4:29:03
