Rhasidat Adeleke has posted another weekend to remember for Irish athletics, breaking her own national records in both the 200 and 400 metres while racing in the United States.

Competing at the Tom Jones Memorial invitational meet in Florida on Saturday night, the Tallaght AC star produced a scintillating 49.90 to break her own Irish 400m which she had posted indoors back in February.

In so doing Adeleke has become the first Irishwoman to go below 50 seconds for 400m, taking almost half a second off her own previous best. It is the second fastest time posted this year in the Women’s 400 metres, behind only the winner on Saturday night Britton Wilson of the United States. It is also the eighth fastest time in the world since the Tokyo Olympics.

The previous night she ran 22.34 in the 200 metres, smashing her previous national record of 22.52 which she set in January.

The new record smashes her previous best of 22.52 which she clocked indoors back in late January.

This latest record-breaking performance comes on the back of a superb indoor season which has seen Adeleke claim a silver medal in the 400m final at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships back in March.
