It was a weekend to remember for Kerry in Women’s Gaelic Games with Lidl National League Division One title in football, a first since 1991, and a first-ever Very National Camogie title in the Division 2A decider.

That both games should have been decided at Croke Park was an additional bonus for the Kingdom.

The footballers defeated Galway to follow in Meath’s footsteps winning the Division One Title after taking the Division Two crown the year before.

They were the two sides to contest last year’s TG4 All Ireland Final and Kerry now have revenge for that game firmly in their sites. It is an exciting period for the sport with a host of teams coming through or re-emerging to break the stranglehold that first Cork and then Dublin had on the All-Ireland. title.

Neither of those counties has gone away and Armagh will have the ambition to go from D2 Champions to D1 Champions themselves next year after they won their title, also on Saturday.

In the Sunday Camogie finals, Galway defeated Cork in the Division One final, but the drama of the day had already played out with Kerry and Meath level on seven occasions before the Munster team edged in front in the closing minutes to win by the tightest of margins.

It is the first time that a national Camogie League title at this level has been welcomed back to the County and all the more special for that. It means that the County will be competing at Division 1B next season, a first for the County.
