The World Cup opening fixture is less than two weeks away and will hopefully deliver a surge of interest in young girls wanting to play the sport.

The pinnacle for most, and the top of the pyramid here when it comes to the development of the game is the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division, a testing ground where nine of the current Republic of Ireland squad found their start, and which has grown in popularity and importance through investment over the last number of years.

The league is currently on a mid-season break to allow for a full focus on matters in Australia. Eight points separate the top four teams after 13 games of this season with Peamount United leading the way from Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers.

Drawing a line that is clear and visible from the World Cup to the League is important and has been brilliantly captured in today’s Daily Video from League of Ireland sponsor SSE Airtricity.

Jamie Finn, Áine O’Gorman and Louise Quinn went back to their original clubs to bring a hint of emotion and a strong bond between where they came from and where they are going.

Finn didn’t make the final panel of 23 but is still traveling as one of the training players.

“This is just the beginning of what’s to come for Women’s football in Ireland,” she says in the video above.
