Shamrock Rovers are putting weight behind a campaign to encourage more supporters to attend games following on from the buzz around the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For Saturday’s Sports Direct FAI Cup game against Killester Donnycarney, anyone wearing either of the two club’s jerseys or an Ireland jersey will get free admission, kick off is at 5.30pm.
For the following week’s league game against Sligo Rovers, the club is running a ‘players go free’ promotion aimed at schoolgirl and schoolboy clubs where the players have free admission, only coaches or parents pay the €10 admission.
The squad will be visiting local schools in the build up to match week with complimentary tickets.
This will include Republic of Ireland senior Internationals, Áine O’Gorman, who announced her retirement from the international team today, and Abbie Larkin.
Both of the games are being played in Tallaght Stadium.
The Players go free initiative also applies to this Friday’s home game for the Men’s team against Dundalk.
We wrote last week of our hope that the momentum of Australia will not dissipate and that we will see the same rise in attendance and support for our own SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division games as has been the case throughout last season in the top tier leagues of England, Spain and further afield.
These things do not just happen by chance and the club taking a proactive stance has to be applauded.
