The GAA have produced comprehensive preview material for each of the nine games taking place across the All Ireland Senior Football Championship kicking off this weekend.

From London to New York, from Clones to Dungarvan, from Longford to Cork and Portlaoise to Wexford, the drama will unfold games take place across each of the provincial championships.

The season will run for sixteen weeks, culminating with the All-Ireland final on July 28th.

 

LONDON v GALWAY

Saturday, 3pm

This is Galway’s 11th championship meeting with London extending back to their first clash in 1977. Galway have won the previous ten, the most recent coming in 2019 when they finished four points clear. It was the closest London ever came to the Tribesmen.

*Galway finished sixth in this year’s Allianz League Division 1 table, winning two, drawing one and losing four. *London finished seventh in Division 4, winning one, drawing one and losing five.

*Galway are bidding this season to win the Connacht title three-in-a-row for the first time since 1982-83-84.

Last Year: Galway beat Roscommon and Sligo to take the Connacht title. They beat Tyrone and Westmeath in the All- Ireland ‘round robin’ and lost to Armagh before being eliminated from the championship when losing to Mayo in a preliminary quarter-final. London lost to Sligo in the Connacht championship and to Offaly and Cavan in the Tail- teann Cup while drawing with Laois.

*Galway were the second lowest scores (6-76) in Division 1 this year, two points ahead of Roscommon.

*The Galway-London winners will play Sligo or Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final on the weekend of April 20/21.

 

NEW YORK v MAYO

They meet for the sixth time in the championship, with Mayo having won the previous five comfortably, the most recent being in 2019 when they had 21 points to spare.

*Mayo finished fourth in Division 1 this year, winning four and losing three games. New York don’t compete in the Allianz League.

*Last Year: Mayo lost to Roscommon in the Connacht quarter-final. They beat Kerry and Louth and lost to Cork in the All-Ireland ‘round robin.’ They beat Galway in the preliminary quarter-final but lost by 12 points to Dublin in the quarter-final.

*New York have scored only one goal in their previous five championship meetings with Mayo.

*The New York-Mayo winners will play Roscommon in the Connacht semi-final on the weekend of April 20/21.

 

MONAGHAN v CAVAN

Clones

They last met in the Ulster championship in 2020 when Cavan won a preliminary round game by a point after extra- time, a win that set them on their way to winning the Ulster title for the first time since 1997. Cavan also beat Mona- ghan in the 2019 Ulster quarter-final, leaving Monaghan seeking their first championship win over the Breffni Blues since 2017.

*Last Year: Monaghan beat Tyrone and lost to Derry in the Ulster championship. They drew with Derry, beat Clare and lost to Donegal in the All-Ireland ‘round robin’. They beat Kildare in the preliminary quarter-final, beat Armagh (penalties) in the quarter-final and lost to Dublin in the semi-final.

*The Monaghan-Cavan winners will play Tyrone in the Ulster quarter-final on the weekend of April 20/21.

 

LEITRIM v SLIGO

Remarkably, this will be their first meeting in the Connacht championship since 2011. They met in the All-Ireland qualifiers in 2016 and in the Tailteann Cup two years ago.

*Last Year: Sligo beat London and New York to reach the Connacht final, where they lost to Galway. They lost to Ros- common and Dublin and drew with Kildare in the All-Ireland ‘round robin’. Leitrim lost to New York in the Connacht quarter-final. They lost to Antrim, Fermanagh and Wexford in the Tailteann Cup.

*The Leitrim-Sligo winners will play Galway or London in the Connacht semi-final on the weekend of April 20/21.

 

WEXFORD v CARLOW

They meet in the Leinster championship for the first time since 2017 when Carlow won a first-round game by four points in Carlow.

*Last Year: Carlow lost to Wicklow by eight points in the Leinster first round. In the Tailteann Cup, they beat Wicklow and Longford and lost to Limerick in the ‘round robin’ stages. They beat New York in the preliminary quarter-final and lost the quarter-final to Antrim. Wexford lost to Laois in the Leinster first round. They drew with Fermanagh, lost to Antrim and beat Leitrim in the Tailteann Cup ‘round robin’. They beat Offaly in the preliminary quarter-final before los- ing to Meath in the quarter-final.

*The Carlow-Wexford winners will play Louth in the Leinster quarter-final on the weekend after next.

 

LONGFORD V MEATH

They last met in the championship in 2021 when Meath won by 22 points. Longford beat Meath in 2018.

*The Longford-Meath winners will play Dublin in the Leinster quarter-final on the weekend after next.

 

WESTMEATH v WICKLOW

They meet in the Leinster championship for the first time since 2010 when Westmeath won by a point.

*The Cork-Limerick winners will play Kerry in the Munster semi-final on April 20.

*Limerick’s last championship win over Cork was in the 2003 Munster quarter-final when they won by 0-16 to 0-6 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

 

WATERFORD v TIPPERARY

They meet for a third successive year in the Munster championship. Tipperary won by four points last year and by eight points in 2022. Tipperary also beat Waterford in last year’s Tailteann Cup. Tipperary have won their last eleven championship ties with Waterford who are seeking their first Munster championship win over The Premier County since 1988.
