The number of ticket sales is tracking towards breaking the record attendance for a Republic of Ireland Women’s International in Europe, the 35,944 who watched the visit of Northern Ireland last September.

Tonight’s first home game of the UEFA EURO 2025 Qualifying series sees reigning Euro Champions and World Cup finalists England coming to town.

The Lionesses have been an iconic centrepiece of the surge in interest for Women’s football and the familiarity of names like Lauren James and Alessia Russo makes it an attractive night out for any football fan.

Kick-off is at 7-30 this evening with full coverage on RTÉ2, the Men’s Champions League clash between Man City and Real Madrid having been bumped to the RTÉ News Channel.

The sides have met seven times previously but not since 1987 before all of the current Irish were born.

The roll call doesn’t make for pretty reading with seven defeats, 29 goals conceded and only one scored. England eliminated the Republic of Ireland from both the 1984 and the 1987 European Championships.

There will be plenty of familiarity with 18 of the Irish squad playing in either the Women’s Super League or the Championship in England.

Northern Ireland play Bosnia Herzegovina away from home with a 3-30 pm kick-off in their League B encounter.

Sport for Business Perspective:

Of course this is not going to be easy but this is the level that the Republic of Ireland is at, playing against the best in the world and getting better themselves with every encounter.

It could be a night that will go down in history and one that deserves a record attendance.
