Ireland takes on China in the Davis Cup in Dublin this weekend, elevating tennis in the national sporting consciousness.

Despite its popularity as a sport to play and high levels of engagement with the Grand Slams, Irish Tennis players have to compete for limelight with their colleagues in Gaelic games, rugby, football and golf, but the prestige of the Davis Cup, widely described as the “World Cup of Tennis”, provides a unique platform to showcase the sport.

With Ireland’s best players competing in front of a passionate home crowd at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena, the weekend will redress that imbalance of visibility.

Commercial partners are also part of the story. Nissan, through Pat Tiernan Nissan, has stepped forward as the Official Car Supplier, ensuring transportation for players, officials, and VIPs, while gaining prominent visibility aligned with international sport.

Rackets.ie has taken it a step further by developing an exclusive, limited-edition adidas range of Davis Cup merchandise, including t-shirts and hoodies, available both online and on-site at the arena.

Designed by Joe Cripps and his team, the line offers supporters a tangible way to be part of the moment.

Kevin Quinn of Tennis Ireland emphasised the significance of the partnership, noting how the relationship with Rackets.ie had evolved from supplying balls at an affordable cost to clubs to now producing a fan-facing retail range in collaboration with adidas and Specialist Sports.

The expectation is that the sold-out crowd will turn the arena into a sea of green, with official merchandise playing a key role in building the atmosphere.

These local activations are supported by the global sponsorship base of the Davis Cup itself, which includes brands such as Dunlop, Joma, Corpay Cross-Border, Stake, and UniCredit, providing commercial strength and ensuring the competition is positioned as a premium property worldwide.

For Ireland, being part of that ecosystem brings the kind of visibility that is rarely accessible to smaller federations.

The Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena, with its purpose-built indoor court and amphitheatre-style seating, has been designed to meet the standards of elite international competition.

Hosting the tie here not only ensures a high-quality experience for players and fans but also demonstrates again that Ireland can deliver major global fixtures.

For Sport Ireland, the event is a live showcase of the campus’s versatility and a further argument for continued investment in facilities and infrastructure.

The economic impact of the weekend will be tangible. With all tickets sold, several thousand fans are expected across the two days, generating direct revenue through ticketing, hospitality and merchandise.

Out-of-town visitors, including travelling fans, officials and media, are projected to spend on average between €250 and €500 per day, with many staying for at least two nights.

They will contribute hundreds of thousands of euro to Dublin’s hotels, restaurants and transport providers.

Even a modest share of the crowd booking local accommodation could see €200,000 to €400,000 flow directly into the hotel sector, with additional knock-on spending in food, drink and retail.

When Ireland played Austria at the University of Limerick last year, one of the elements that contributed to the buzz was the number of tennis club friends that had travelled together in groups and were making a party weekend of the occasion.

Beyond the direct figures, the international broadcast and media coverage provide brand exposure for Ireland that cannot easily be quantified but is nonetheless highly valuable.

The games start at 12 noon on Saturday and 11 AM on Sunday and will be shown live on Premier Sports.
